Jian-guo Neighborhood in Huwei Township of Yunlin County was once a Japanese airforce base during the occupation period. In order to have places to hide from the bombs of the American army, there were more than 30 dugouts built at the area.

However, since many of these dugouts have been deserted, an idea was brought up by locals, to make this area into an educational center, which would help people to understand the historical values and meanings of them.

Walking in the fields, uncovering the growing weeds are these dugouts that were built during the Japanese occupation period.

These dugouts were to built to hide from the US army in case of it bombing the place.

The Japanese also used trees and hills as covers from the design of this place and its surrounding area.

For the local residents, there are more than 30 dugouts at Jian-guo Neighborhood in Huwei Township, which is also considered to have the highest density for dugouts in the nation.

Also, since this area used to be a Japanese airforce base, many dorms were built to accommodate all the officers and students at that time, which were also doubled as office buildings.

Zheng-ming Elementary School which is also in the area has got to be the only elementary schools in the nation to have two dugouts located on campus.

So in order to make use of these historical remains, the locals hope that this place can be turned into an educational center for the children,

to educate them about the history, historical meanings and usage of these dugouts.
