The popularity of TV dramas from Japan, South Korea and China among Taiwanese viewers has raised concerns about its negative impacts on the health of the local TV industry.

A group of lawmakers are therefore planning to propose a legal amendment that will double the required percentage of self-produced programs by Taiwan's TV stations.

But detractors say the plan doesn't solve the real problem at all, which has more to do with the quality, rather than quantity, of local TV shows.

When one turns on the TV, and goes through the channels there are many serial dramas using Mandarin voiceover, though they are productions made in Korea or China.

There are even popular Japanese TV dramas.

This means it is increasingly difficult to see locally made, Taiwan dramas.

Non-native produced dramas are mostly on cable TV channels and have become mainstream.

This phenomenon has been a concern for legislators who have called out ETTV and 3 main stations for buying foreign dramas.

They believe this action is going to far and may violate the Cable Television Act saying that locally made content must meet the lower limit of 20% as they are petitioning to amend the law to raise the proportion to 40%.

Legislators want to amend the law to improve the survival of local drama, but the Satellite Broadcasting Association believes that a higher proportion of local self-made drama would affect local drama production capacity,

along with the consumption habits of the audience, plus cable TV pay per view are market mechanisms that cannot be ignored.

Legislators say that amending the law has the goal of increasing total television production and broadcasting, and is not directed towards one station with the decision not being very extreme.

Regarding the control of foreign produced dramas, self control should also be increased, as amending the law alone will not solve the problem of lost audience.
