Taipei City Mayor Hau Long-bin has announced earlier this month that the Wanfang market will be the first site to be torn down for the city's public housing. However, the decision angered the residents in the neighborhood, who believed that the complex will worsen the traffic problem in the area.

Area residents are extremely opposed to the Taipei City Government's plan to build a public housing project on the premises.

Under the city government's plans, the construction of 90 21-ping units will be completed in 2015.

A public meeting was held at the Wanfang Activities Center on Thursday morning to address issues.

Many residents attended wearing white headbands and carrying signs. They say that the Taipei City Government deliberately drove up the rent to force the supermarket to move, and that adding 90 households to the community will exacerbate traffic problems.

According to Taipei City councilors, the construction budget will not pass without the consent of Wanfang residents.
