They may be heroic in films like "Eight Below," but huskies don't usually fare well in the sub-tropical climate of Taiwan and often end up abandoned. In order to raise public awareness of the problem, a group of animal lovers recently held a gathering of 100 huskies in Taipei, trying to find the right owners for these homeless dogs. Although huskies originate in northern regions with cold weather, they have become a popular pet in Taiwan. Due to high demand, huskies are being illegally bred around the island. This husky was unhealthy since birth and suffers from many health problems, and was abandoned by her breeder. Latte suffered a similar fate, and has been injured by gin traps many times. Fortunately, both of these huskies found homes with kind-hearted owners. One animal activist recently launched a centennial husky event to save abandoned huskies from being put to sleep. Apart from raising funds, the activist is also hoping to create a rotating network of temporary homes. During the event, which brought 100 huskies together, the dogs had a great deal of fun playing and getting to know one another. In light of the fact that more and more huskies are ending up at shelters, animal activists are calling on the public to think twice before purchasing or adopting a dog. Being a pet owner requires time and effort, and abandoning a pet not only hurts an innocent life, but wastes social resources. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
