The Central Election Commission has been holding public hearings across Taiwan on whether or not to combine the legislative and presidential elections. A public poll is to be conducted in early April, with the final decision set to be announced on April 19th. The Central Election Commission has held five public hearings across Taiwan since March on whether or not to combine the presidential and legislative elections on the same day. Some scholars mention this proposal could affect those who are to make their first votes. The idea of combining the two elections has been considered for a long time. Proponents say it would save social costs, while skeptics have expressed concern over the potentially long transitional period between the election and the presidential inauguration date in May. The Commission is gathering opinions from all sectors and plans to conduct a public poll in early April. Minister of the commission Chang Po-yah says that if the amendment of the law would help the merge, she would support it.
