In his recent visit to Yunlin, President Ma Ying-jeou met with representatives of local communities for a discussion of key issues the county faces, including worsening land subsidence and pollutions caused by the Sixth Naphtha Cracker Plant. President Ma Ying-jeou visited Yunlin County. After attending the 100th anniversary celebration of Taishi Elementary School, he had an afternoon meeting at Mailiao High School to listen to voices of local residents. The land subsidence problem in Yunlin and Jiayi has worsen to a point that would threaten the safety of the High-Speed Rail system. Some local residents suggest the government to provide subsidies to farmers in the hope to reduce the amount of underground water usage and alleviate the subsidence problem. President Ma Ying-jeou replied that Minister of Public Construction Commission Lee Hong-yuan is on top of the issues and the school representatives say that two serious industrial safety incidents of the Sixth Naphtha Cracker Plant have worried them, asking the central government to install air monitoring equipments and airtight windows to protect the safety of students and faculty members. President Ma Ying-jeou started to visit grassroots groups last Sunday, beginning in Yunlin County.
