Taiwan's recent water crisis is not only affecting people, but it is also posing a major threat to the river's ecosystem, with a large number of dead fish reported in the Taipei's Hsintien Creek. Here on CTS, let's find out what the environmentalists have to say about this alarming situation.
Cleaning crews are riding in these boats, constantly patrolling the waters of the Hsintien Creek scooping out dead fish.
Beginning on Sunday, from the Keelung River's Dachia Harbor to the banks of the Hsintien Creek, lots of dead fish have appeared.
However, local residents say that they have grown accustomed to this sort of thing.
The main species found dead are gray mullet as Taipei City's EPA has come to the preliminary conclusion that this migratory species before high tide began to swim into the Tamsui and Keelung River and arrived too late to travel back at low tide.
For this reason they were trapped in the Tamsui River and suffered from hypoxia.
The EPA also believes that climate change and the lack of rainfall led to reduced river flow and less dissolved oxygen, resulting in a large number of fish deaths.
The number of deaths is estimated to reach three metric tons or around 6,000 fish.
The EPA estimated that it would take 3 days to clean up this mess as it is also taking water samples for testing and tracing the possibility of other causes.
Taipei's EPA is also worried that without rain, even more negative affects will challenge the city's river ecosystem.
