SUBJECT OF HOMOSEXUALITY ON HOLD?

The Ministry of Education will be temporarily suspending their plan to introduce the subject of homosexuality to elementary and junior high school students this coming fall, following criticism from many.

However, this move has sparked gender equality groups to raise the issue, which involves the significance to teach the young individuals about diverse sexual orientations in allowing them to respect one another from an early age.

In order to design the gender equality education syllabus for elementary and junior high school student that is to take place in August, the Ministry of Education was planning on introduce homosexual topic to 5th graders.

However, many lawmakers, parents and teacher groups believe that, it would not be appropriate for the age group and asked the MOE to review its gender equality education policy based on the, so called, correct sexual concepts, which disappointed those groups which had been promoting true gender equality education for a long time.

GLBT group took out a survey, showing that over 50% of the gay population felt some level of attraction to members of the same gender before elementary school, and the figure would go up to 70% by adding the time in junior high, but, over half of the gay population would not dare to tell anyone about their sexual preference until college.

Their growing up experience was full of self-doubt, oppression and pressure.

Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights pointed out that, the Canadian government has introduced a sex education material in 1994, teaching students of all ages about sexual preference and affirmation, while last year, it focused on grade school kids with cross gender education.

Those groups pointed out that it has been 7 years since the passing of gender equality law, with scholars in sex education meeting 10 times, 2 public hearings and numerous discussion session to make up the sex education contents, they cannot allow certain peoples objection to influence Legislative Yuan's decision and ruining years of hard work to do the right thing
