THE WINNER OF 2011 CHIUKO FICTION AWARD

The top prize of this year's Chiuko fiction award, worth 2 million NT dollars, went to a high school teacher for his work, "Motel Castle."

Among a total of 156 submissions, the novel distinguishes itself for its realistic depiction of the problems in campus through the cynical perspectives of teenagers.

The winner of the fiction competition with the prize of NT$2 million is a teacher from Taichung first high school named Chang Jing Hong.

His work of Motel castle is set in Taichung, with story in school campus, motels with many of the current pop culture elements.

In the story, school students are referred to as bird eggs and teachers are turtle eggs, those are the languages young teens would use, an effort to allow the kids to understand his work.

Chang has been in the education field for over 14 years, he uses his most familiar campus language in Taichung to reflect the problems of the society and campus life, which won the praises of judges.

The event attracted 156 submissions this year, however, judges seems to find that, many new writers are going towards the trend of westernized stories or internet fictions, which lack the unique Taiwanese flavor.

The publishing company is hoping to discover a new generation of writers with the highest paid event, and hope to use the event to reflect the current Chinese creative field changes.
