Homes inundated and farmland submerged - this is the devastating impact of Typhoon Nesat on rural towns in the Philippines. The typhoon swept across Manila and the provinces on Tuesday, leaving at least 39 dead and over 30 missing. Towns and villages along the overflowing Pampanga River were engulfed by floodwaters reaching up to 4.5 metres in some areas. Rescuers evacuated residents to higher ground and distributed relief goods to those worst affected. But even as residents struggle to cope with the impact, more trouble appears to be on its way. Another storm is approaching the Philippines and officials are advising those in its path to evacuate. Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda said, "For this coming typhoon, they should evacuate in the morning. They should not wait to be rescued, because we don't have that capability." Damage nationwide from Typhoon Nesat is estimated at 80 million US dollars. Almost 170,000 people displaced by the flooding are staying in evacuation centres around the stricken areas.
