Some were buried in landslides, while others were swept out to sea.

The smell of dead bodies permeated the air at the disastrous sites, as rescue workers race to save more lives.

According to The Philippines Red Cross, the death toll is now standing at 652. 800 are still reported missing after Tropical Storm Washi struck the southern Mindanao region midnight Friday when people were sleeping, sending torrents of water and mud through villages.

About 100,000 residents have been forced from their homes. The government and other aid agencies have been struggling to provide assistance for those affected by the tragedy, with clean water and food still needed for many displaced residents.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino is due to visit the stricken region soon. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said in the latest statement that the United States is ready to help.
