MORE AMERICAN PRESENCE THIS YEAR?

　　Love and chaos will be at the center of this year's Cannes film festival. Festival director Thierry Fremaux has announced the movies chosen to compete during the world's biggest cinema showcase. Fremaux said the topics of the films will be those of society.

　　Thierry Fremaux: "If we had to qualify it (the films selection) in a few words... love and chaos, suffering and generosity. Movie makers are artists, so the eternal topic of love, romance, of encounters between human beings and intimate destinies is something we will find a lot."

The festival received more than 1700 submissions, a number increasing each year. Fremaux said the films chosen prove cinema is an art that internet and new technologies cannot challenge.

　　Thierry Fremaux: "My point of view is not only the films that we have but also the films we have seen, which is the proof of the good health of what cinema is still today and even surrounded by new images, by internet and by this new way to make films, it's still something very specific and hard to do."

　　This edition of the festival will once again be a mix of blockbusters and art films from 26 different countries. Newcomers this year are Syria, Jordan and Puerto Rico, as American cinema makes a come back with four movies. This year's festival will honor Marilyn Monroe.
