Colombia said it may double annual coffee production by 2020, reaching 18 million 60-kilogram sacks of coffee to meet growing demand in China and Russia.

To reach the goal, the South American nation will first have to recover to its historic level of 11 million sacks after flooding and scheduled crop renovations that cut production in the past three years. But Luis Genaro Muniz, the head of Colombia's coffee growers federation, is very optimistic about the production condition, as he believed Colombia will recover and surge forward in the coming years.

"In the long run, I believe that the world will receive 18 million sacks of coffee from Colombia. What we have to do is to get to that level along with the market. We can't lose sight of the market," he said.

In addition, facing the rising demand in China, Muniz hopes to facilitate export to China by signing a free trade agreement between the two countries."When every Chinese person drinks at least one cup of coffee a month, we will not have any problem selling 18 or 20 million sacks," he said.

Last year, Colombia exported 6,442 sacks of coffee to China and 83,090 sacks to Russia.Colombia produced 7.8 million sacks of coffee in 2011, its smallest harvest in 30 years, and this year they expect a similar harvest. The 2013 harvest is expected to be larger as weather patterns improve, and Muniz added coffee growers will start increasing planted area.

Colombia's coffee production topped out in 1991 and 1992 with around 16 million sacks, but currently about a third of the country's plantations are being renewed.
