The women of the Kavalan tribe from Hualien's Hsin-Hse have a distinctive and unique weaving method.

It's not how they weave, but what they use to make their traditional clothing and daily accessories.

Here on CTS, let's check out this one-of-a-kind expertise.

The old woman sitting on the ground is currently weaving.

But you probably didn't notice the fiber she's using is thick and doesn't look like cotton string.

What she's using is banana fiber.

Many banana tree branches lie next to this woman.

They must rip the fiber from the branches first before they can begin. Once the fibers are dried, then they can be used.

This Kavalan woman is currently weaving.

The vest, small purse, and even the table cloth are all made from banana fiber because of the abundance of banana trees.

These objects had great importance in the village's past.

Although most young people today don't wear banana fiber clothes anymore, the village elders hope to preserve this art.

Now, the tribe is hoping to create new life from this old art.
