With the groupers listed in the ECFA early harvest list, the government is hoping an increase in grouper production. However, there is a danger lurking in annual $3.8 billion NT dollars due to the baby groupers being affected by infection. 30% of baby groupers have already died this year. Aquaculture companies are asking the government to quickly come out with a vaccine or Taiwan's grouper industry may face the possibility of disappearing. Thousands of groupers were placed in the small pond, ready for export. Taiwan's grouper aquaculture technology is number one in the world. Taiwan can export both baby fries all the way up to adult groupers. But now, the baby groupers are facing a serious infection. The small grouper floating on top of the water died because of infection in the pond. Aquaculture companies specializing in baby fries estimates 30% of fries have already died this year due to the hot weather. Although the Fisheries Agency started researching on a vaccine 7 years ago, it still hasn't found a cure yet. Some companies are worried the same pattern will take place like the early days of raising tiger shrimp. Farmers had to constantly change specie because they were not able to cure the infection. If this problem can't be solved, the grouper industry may disappear in a few years. Academics said besides finding a vaccine, Taiwan's problem might be in the water quality and how it raises its fish. They say they need to raise the fish along with the farmers in order to discover what may be wrong. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
