The high temperatures of the past few weeks remind us to take nothing for granted, from air-conditioned rooms to a plentiful selection of produce at the market. Recently, the price of cabbage has increased by 20 times due to a large amount of cabbages wilting from the sweltering heat.

This summer, you just might have to change up your normal diet.

People and plants alike are suffering from Taiwan's hot weather.

Cabbage prices, once 2 NT per kilogram, have shot up to a shocking 40 NT per kilogram due to the summer heat. In places like Taitung, where the burning winds cause temperatures to reach 39 degrees, cabbages growing under the hot sun are wilting before they can even reach their full size.

Leafy vegetables in general are not faring well in this harsh weather. As a result, flowers and produce are in short supply, causing prices to soar.

Upon seeing these prices, consumers and housewives say that they cannot bear to spend that much on produce. However, most have no choice but to pay the price.
