As the economic downturn leaves many people jobless and homeless, a woman in Yilan is making small but notable contributions to the society by offering free vegetarian lunches for them three times a week.

Despite the hot weather, 60-year old Lin Su-chen arrives at Yilan's Chungshan Park at 11:30 a.m. with five barrels of vegetable rice.

Within seconds, there is a long line of homeless people

For the past two years, the Dongshan Township resident has been waking up at 5 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays to prepare 30 kilograms of rice and five barrels of vegetables for the homeless.

She delivers the food while it's still hot, and is often accompanied by her sister.

Lin says that her children are grown and she is on her own, and that she is filled with joy when she sees the look of contentment on the faces of the homeless.

She often feeds up to 80 people at a time, and encourages them to take a second serving to go.

When asked how much she has spent on supplies over the past two years, Lin politely says that she has never calculated the amount, and that she often receives donations of rice and vegetables.

She says that she is missing only volunteers, and that she hopes that she can inspire others to help her help more people.
