24 gas stations have been found guilty of polluting its groundwater and its surrounding soil, according to a new pollution monitoring system provided by the Environmental Protection Administration. The Environmental Protection Administration recently ordered gas stations in Taiwan to install pollution monitoring systems. Using these systems, the EPA identified 24 stations around the island that are violating pollution regulations. In particular, six stations, including Taipei County's CPC Wugu Station, Taoyuan County's TYBUS Bade Station, and Kaohsiung County's Mituo Station were found to be critically polluting their surrounding areas although none of them have been operating for more than ten years. The benzene density in the groundwater and soil around Mituo Station was found to exceed the legal standard by 532 times. According to the EPA, 1,837 of Taiwan's 2,600 gas stations have already been inspected.
