In a month's time, Taipei City's first unit of the public housing renovation project has been completed, costing 850,000 NT dollars. This revamping work in Wenshan District will be used as a model for the remaining 22 units that will be built by 2012, which will benefit more than 38,000 disadvantaged families.

Using this card sensor, the door automatically opens as there are no steps leading into the apartment and the door width is 90 centimeters which provides easy access to the physically disabled.

The widths of indoor walkways are also 90 centimeters to allow wheelchairs enough space to turn around.

The bathroom has non-slip flooring and railings and provides relatively safe access.

It is different than other public housing as the city government renovated this 30-year-old apartment over 1 month, spending 850,000 NT dollars to make it a barrier free residence.

This was the first residence to be transformed and the location was Wenshan District's Wan Le Public Housing with each 19-ping space costing 5,500 per month though after the renovation no rental fee has been set, though many expect it to be a little more expensive than it is now.

The completed renovation of this residential housing is meant to be a model, and next year Wenshan and Neihu and the other 22 other public housing rental units will see one residence turned into a demonstration model.

And in 2012, there will be 23 buildings or 3,833 households that will first be provided to the physically disabled and other disadvantaged groups.
