National Taipei University of Education has recently faced strong criticism and questioning from its teachers for merging five graduate schools at once. However, in response to the uproar, the university said that the merging is to raise the quality of the graduate schools and everything was done according to the law.

Over the past ten years, due to lower birth rates and un-contracted teachers, a number of national teacher's colleges have been rendered into education universities.

During the transformation process, many graduate schools were established.

However, the MOE issued an order to each school declaring them to reduce the number of teachers in their graduate schools starting 2012 .

Now another problem has risen with the National Taipei University of Education altogether consolidating five of their graduate schools.

This is triggered fiery protest from the school departments.

According to school officials, when the university originally established the graduate schools, they were overly ambitious.

As a result, a portion of the independent schools have already been penalized by the MOE and must reduce their recruitment rate.

In consolidating the graduate schools, the MOE says the action will raise the threshold of teacher quality and the overall education quality of the graduate schools.

The director of NTUE's independent graduate school thinks that school officials should remove outdated departments instead of focusing on lowering the number of graduate schools which already have distinct functions.

Teachers and directors find this decision by the school officials to cut the number of graduate schools hard to accept.
