Next time when you try to dispose of unwanted documents, make sure you know what you're going to feed into the shredder. Earlier this month, a man in Taipei County shredded a wad of banknotes worth 200,000 NT dollars by accident. Now, thanks to the help of a specialist from the Investigation Bureau, about 93% of the amount are likely to be retrieved.

A factory owner surnamed Lin accidentally shredded a pack of dollar bills that is worth 200,000 NT dollars several days ago.

The central bank told Mr. Lin that he had to put the dollar bills together in order to exchange for new ones.

Mr. Lin had no choice but to turn to the Investigation Bureau for help, where there's an expert who can help to restore his loss.

Ms. Liu Huei-Feng is the only forensic technician specialized in identifying broken or damaged bank notes.

With these tools, a strong memory and nimble hands, she has helped retrieved over 7.57 million NT dollars for the public during the past 5 years.

When asked about her tips in putting the notes together, Liu says she first starts with the distinct words meaning "Republic of China" in Mandarin, and then moves on to find the other pieces.

Through this method, she has identified 186 notes and if she successfully puts other remaining parts of the bills together, she can help Mr. Lin retrieve 186,000 NT dollars.

Liu said she would try her best to restore them because these are Mr. Lin's hard-earned money, even though it's really difficult to put the broken pieces together.

And how much money will Mr. Lin get in the end?

The result will be revealed in a week.
