Shalu Junior High School's tug-of-war team recently won three national championships.

The school doesn't actually have an athletics program, and its success in competitions has led to other schools visiting the campus in the hopes of discovering Shalu's secret training weapons.

Many were surprised to find that Shalu's team doesn't have any secret weapons, and instead trains with readily available equipment like 7-kilogram iron chairs, which are tied together for practice and put away afterwards.

Coach Pan Yu-lung is extremely proud of the team for achieving success without funds or resources.

More than half of the students on the team are from single-parent homes or being raised by their grandparents, and the team's success has helped them develop self-confidence.

The students compare themselves to characters in martial arts films, and say that their training environment and learning to use available resources are valuable life lessons.
