The arrival of the cold air mass has sent temperatures down to 9 degrees Celsius in certain parts of northern and central Taiwan. But the cold weather isn't expected to last long. According to the Central Weather Bureau, the mercury will rise back to 20 degrees Celsius or higher in most parts of the island later today. The strength of first cold air mass this winter caused an incident in Kinmen, where a 40-year-old truck driver unfortunately froze to death while slumbering inside his vehicle. The cold air mass, coupled with the heavy precipitation, is making the weather especially cold. In Danshui, temperatures dropped to as low as 9.1 degrees Celsius. The Central Weather Bureau issued a special weather forecast, predicting that the weather will be coldest on the 17th and 18th. Temperatures around Southern Taiwan will drop to the nines, and the weather will be the coldest around nighttime. The weather forecast also mentions heavy precipitation in nothern and eastern Taiwan districts. The low temperatures combined with a sea level of under 200 meters in Yilan County has brought to the area its first snowfall this winter and accumulating 20 centimeters of snow. It has started snowing atop Yushan, as well. Although, there was not enough snow accumulation to obtain a measurement of its depth, the ground was still covered in white. According to the Central Weather Bureau, the weather will take a slight turn on the 17th, and on the 18th, the weather will become drier. Although the sunlight during daytime masks the low temperatures, the cold weather is especially obvious at night. The temperature will start to climb back up on the 19th. People heading out are advised to keep warm. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
