To address the severe shortage of rehab vehicles in Taipei County, the authorities recently launched two large-sized rehab buses that can hold as many as six wheelchairs and fourteen seats. But the addition of two buses with increased capacity is still far from sufficient to meet the demands of the county.

These aren't just ordinary buses. They have been equipped with wheelchairs and other necessary equipment for their passengers and travel to many places in Taiwan.

Taipei County has for the first time set up two such Rehabuses, which contain 14 seats, six wheelchairs, and can accomodate up to 26

Modified from low-riding city buses, the Rehabuses are equipped with mechanical platforms to allow wheelchair-bound passengers easier access onto the bus.

These Rehabuses give its disabled passengers the opportunity to go on tours and participate in events with accompaniment.

Tour destinations are usually in the Greater Taipei area.

The new buses were promoted with a special fifty percent discount deal and many interested passengers immediately applied.

Meanwhile, there are only 161 smaller sized Rehabuses in Taipei County, which are scrambling to service over ten thousand disabled individuals.

These smaller buses are only able to carry one wheelchair-bound passenger and one other person.

The destination of these smaller buses are usually schools and medical facilities.

Although the bigger Rehabus can accomodate many more passengers, its function is primarily for touring purposes and do not solve the shortage problem of the smaller Rehabuses.

According to the Department of Social Welfare, only the addition of more rehabuses and public donations can solve the rehabus shortage problem.
