Medical education may soon face a significant change. Under the current system, medical students can become a resident at the hospital after completing the seven-year program. But with the new policy, graduates will have to intern for an additional year. The regulation, which will be in effect this coming July, is expected to benefit both parties, by providing more hands-on experience for the doctors, while ensuring the patient's safety. Chen Shih-yih is soon to graduate from medical school. He is doing an internship at a hospital. Originally, he could seek a resident position at a hospital after finishing seven years of medical education. But this year, the system changes and requires him to do another year of internship. According to the planning of Department of Health, medical school graduates are to complete four months in internal medicine, two months in surgery, one month in pediatric, one month in gynecology clinic and two months of community medical service. During which, they are to meet with patients in small-sized hospitals, which are hoped to benefit their clinical experiences. But some medical students have different views. In its defense, the Department of Health believes the current medical practice is too specialized. For example, ophthalmologists only care about eyes and ignore whether patients have diabetes or heart disease. Without complete clinical medical experiences, doctors can have problems in judgments, leading to delay in treatment or even malpractice. This new system is to be implemented on medical students who are to graduate this upcoming July. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
