According to a recently published report, the survival rate of premature babies has increased over the past decade. However, that figure does not correspond with the morbidity stat, which shows no signs of decrease in terms of babies suffering from sicknesses or diseases. Doctors are reminding mothers to take prevention measures from the beginning of the pregnancy to reduce the chance of premature birth.

5-year-old Hui-yu, was born at just 30 weeks, and weighed 1,426 grams, needing to live in an incubator for five days, and return home with a variety of instruments as her mother worried that this young child would forget to breathe.

This 3-year girl was born weighing just 1,212 grams, with her mother red-eyed and thanking God for her baby.

The Premature Baby Foundation statistics, show that from 1997 to 2010, the top three causes of death amongst extremely underweight, premature children, are respiratory failure, pulmonary hemorrhage and sepsis. However, the overall survival rate of premature babies rose from 75% to 87%.

Premature babies require special attention if their organs are immature.

Doctors say that previous records on premature babies were not shared by hospitals, but after years of coordination, it has been established which has been a great help.

Doctors also warn that congenital uterine problems and other gynecological diseases, along with old age or work pressure experienced by women have led to a high probability of premature children.

But from the start of pregnancy, regular inspections can reduce the probability of premature delivery.

The next steps include follow-up care for premature babies allowing them to grow up safely.
