A legal lecture was recently held by prosecutors for the scandal-stricken Brother Elephants, one of the most popular professional baseball teams in Taiwan, trying to help the players to better protect themselves against sports gamblers. Before the start of the season, these Brother Elephants players are receiving a legal education at the Shihlin District Prosecutors Office. In 2009, a match-fixing scandal tarnished the image and strength of the team. Recent amendments will also make future gambling on baseball a criminal activity, something which these players support. They are not only asking for penalties but also rewards for law-abiding players including more support and more resources for them to continue in this profession. To stop match fixing, the Legislative Yuan passed the third reading of a bill that will make the maximum penalty increased to ten years in prison, and a fine of up to 50 million NT$. Each year, every team conducts a legal class, and still the match fixing scandal broke out. Now, that the government has increased penalties with prosecutors also eager to investigate, they hope that real change will come to baseball and this old problem will no longer arise. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
