As cold weather hinders the growth of crops, farmers have been busy coming up with methods to prevent seedling damages. However, if the temperatures continue to fall, there is a high chance that they may face a seedling shortage, which can impact future harvest. Now is the growing period for seedlings and farmers are tilling the fields in preparation to plant the seedlings. However, the seedlings are growing especially against with the onslaught of the low temperatures. In normal circumstances, the seedlings take approximately 20 days to mature, but as this year's winter is especially cold, the seedlings will take over 30 days. Fewer seedlings will mature and will hinder the transfer process to field plantations. Farmers are taking extra care and rushing to protect the seedlings against the harsh winter cold with plastic covers. Some farmers who have already finished planting the seedlings say that if temperatures continue to drop, more seedlings will not be able to survive the cold. After planting the seedlings, farmers have to till the fields again. Not only does it add to the farmers' costs, but the development of the seedlings will be affected, as well. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
