New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu, who earlier turned down Chen's donation offer, explained yesterday that huge cash grants can't really solve the problems of the disadvantaged, while the city's newly established commodity bank may provide more substantial help for those in need.

The New Taipei commodity bank was set up recently with mayor Eric Chu paying an inspection visit to it.

Chu said that, besides rice and comforters, the bank also provides cash assistance.

New Taipei city government pointed out that, over 70 local business units are cooperating with the bank, from hyper mart to appliance general stores.

There are currently around NT$30 million worth of supplies and cash.

In the next year, surpassing last years NT$58 million in donation should not be a problem, by then, nearly 100,000 middle to low income families, disadvantaged families and those seniors living alone in the city will benefit from the kind donations from the society.

There was a recent donation from a businessman of NT$10 million, which half of the amount went to Taoyuan county, where Chu was once the magistrate, and the other half went to the newly set up commodity bank.

Chu kindly thank the Mainland philanthropist Chen Kuang biao for his donation and refused to take it for he is confident that his team can take care of the disadvantaged living in New Taipei city.
