For many, the Taiwan Railway's Kuanghua Express train is more than just a transportation service, but it is something they are accustomed to before all the new technology took over. With most of its routes suspended, let's take you to check out the last few running trains.

Kuanghua Express trains went into service in 1966 in celebration of Chiang Kai-shek's 80th birthday.

The white, stainless DR2700 trains could travel at speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour, and at the time set a new record of 4:45 for travel time between Taipei and Kaohsiung.

Kuanghua Express trains were the height of luxury in train travel, and it was an honor for Taiwan Railway engineers to serve on them.

However, the white bodies of the trains were also blamed for numerous traffic accidents due their reflective surfaces.

They were later painted yellow, and were relegated to Taiwan Railway's western routes after Tzuchiang Express trains went into service in 1978.

As Taiwan Railway began replacing its entire fleet with electric trains, Kuanghua Express trains were gradually phased out. In the future, railway enthusiasts will have to look for tourism trains to hear Kuanghua's unique whistle.
