The Ministry of Education has recently approved 132 domestic universities and colleges to admit 2,000 mainland students starting in 2011. Still, many people remain doubtful on whether or not Taiwanese schools can attract so many students from China, considering its tuition fees and academic rankings.

Starting this September, Mainland Chinese students may be seen in college campus in Taiwan.

It plans to recruit 13 doctorate students and 61 students for its undergraduate programs, with high hopes to attract students from middle and upper class families in China.

But the tuition of Taiwan's college costs twice as much as in China, about 100,000 NTD per year.

The total expense of four years could reach 1 million NTD.

When commenting on the incentives for Mainland Chinese students to study in Taiwan, the secretary-general of Feng Chia University said that studying in Taiwan is a lot cheaper than in the United States or Europe.

Faculty members are no less qualified than their counterparts in public universities in Mainland China.

Studying in Taiwan is also a stepping stone for further education in the United States and European countries.

National Taiwan University is permitted to recruit 73 students and intends to enroll 58 students for its graduate programs and 15 for the doctorate programs.

Ranked at 21 among universities in Asia, the top university believes its engineering, law and social science programs are promising enough to meet students' learning needs.

Some private schools admit that recruiting Mainland Chinese student is one of the efforts to minimize the impact of the few children phenomenon.

From the recent cross-strait exchanges, it's apparent that Chinese students do make a positive impact on Taiwanese students' learning attitude.
