The old streets and alleys around the island have become popular destinations among visitors. However, people are criticizing that the merchandizes on the shelves are not directly related to these historical sites. To maintain the traditional heritage, some are calling the government to take the initiative to help the local businesses to incorporate related products.

The old street in Lukang has many vendors selling everything from dough figurines to animals made from drinking straws.

These items catch attention from shoppers.

But they are not related to the old street's past.

Inside the ancient old building, there are only a few wood sculpture works that are slightly connected to the old street.

The bestsellers in the souvenir stores are spinning tops, bamboo baskets and wooden pigs.

It's not easy for tourists to buy anything unique to Lukang.

Businessmen on the street said they had to survive by selling everything.

All the Taiwan-inspired merchandises such as ancient toys, windmills and glasswares can be commonly seen in old streets across the island.

Local cultural and history workers in Lukang criticize that the old street merchandises have nothing to do with old street cultures.

While nostalgia becomes the major selling point, it is unable to connect with local culture.

Experts believe that the government needs to take the initiative to help preserve old street culture by incoporating local industries.
