The targets of the government's new luxury tax bill not only include private jets, expensive cars and frequently resold residential properties, but high-end furniture items as well. Starting July at the earliest, consumers may have to pay an extra 10% for furniture products priced at over half a million NT dollars.

Two years ago, TSMC Chairman Morris Chang purchased a luxury residence in Hsinchu and filled it millions of NT's worth of high-end imported European furniture.

The Ministry of Finance is set to implement a new luxury tax, and intends to include pieces priced at more than 500,000 NT on its list of taxable items.

The tax could go into effect as soon as July.

This kitchen set, which has a price tag of 2.4 million NT, will cost 2.64 million NT by the end of the year, while this 700,000 NT imported sofa from England will cost 770,000 NT.

A number of furniture stores say that they have received a wave of orders in recent days from consumers trying to avoid the tax, and this 500,000 NT dining set was also sold two days ago.

High-end furniture stores say that they are not concerned about the tax affecting sales, because the tax is mere pocket change for those that can afford their products.
