The Shengli New Village in Pingtung is the largest existing Japanese-style military community in Taiwan, which was home to more than 60 generals at one time. And as the village is scheduled for renovation soon, the residents are now planning to make a documentary about it to preserve the history and collective memory of the community.

Visiting Pingtung City's Shengli New village is like going back in time with Japanese-style cottages with wooden windows fitted with green glass.

Green vines crawl up these buildings with red doors and old trees letting sunlight slip in leading to the illusion of time stopping.

This military community is not only beautiful, but is also famously known as the General's Village, because it is not only the largest but best preserved military dependent community in Taiwan.

At its peak, more than 60 generals once lived here including the famous general Sun Li-jen.

At the time, many wore their military uniforms and the stars shining on their shoulders not only gave prestige to the area but also lent it fame as the general's village.

However, time flies, and the military community is facing reconstruction.

Residents do not want to see this history disappear as they are recreating these important stories through workshops where old photos and the memories of elders are being transformed into a documentary film.

Even if the generals are old and their stars are collapsing, they hope that future generations will always remember them and the glorious era of this village.
