According to the latest global research, Taiwan has the second highest demand for employees, which shows that 45 percent of Taiwanese companies are planning to hire more people in the second quarter of the year. Even so, there are still over 100,000 middle-aged unemployed workers who are waiting for an opportunity.

To help these job seekers, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has decided to encourage businesses to hire middle-aged and older individuals by offering financial incentives. However, scholars said that giving out subsidies is just a temporary solution.

As the economy is supposed to be picking up, there are more job openings at different job fairs. However, according to an international human resources company's recent survey, 45% Taiwan businesses are to look for new hires in the second quarter, which ranks Taiwan second out of 39 nations surveyed, just behind India.

The most in-demand sectors of Taiwanese business that need to hire are, manufacturing sector in first place, then comes construction mining, then financial sector, and not just the high tech industries that need to hire new people.

Though with the increase in demand for new hires, the January unemployment people number still reached 510,000, with 107,00 of them in the middle-aged and high group.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has thus decided to give 400 million NT dollars out as subsidy fund to encourage small to medium enterprises to hire those older workers, with the business able to get a 10,000 NT dollars grant per month for each new 45 year or older new employee hired.

Scholars pointed out that, nothing would be more meaningful than to transition some white-collared workers to the small to medium enterprises to help them transition and grow, for those business lack the resources and knowledge to train people with talents.

Thus, on the average, people working in that sector are usually with low ability.

While high tech industries are cut-throat, many white-collared workers in the middle age and older group were laid off during international financial crisis,

which created new unemployment problem, which the government should set the priority straight though its heart is in the right place.
