It's been widely considered that Taiwan is more suitable for the cultivation of rice rather than of wheat. But a group of farmers in Miaoli have recently proven otherwise. With the help of agricultural experts, they had their first successful harvest of wheat early this month, which represents a significant breakthrough in Taiwan's capability of food production. In the winter, the field has become this beautiful golden hue, and the wheat is ready for harvesting. In Miaoli's Wanbao area, local farmers grow wheat in the 3-hectare field, and after 125 days of growing, the wheat is ripe. Farmers harvest the wheat with their reaping and threshing machine and they are thrilled to see the golden wheat shining under the sun. One of the farmer who participated in the planting program, Hong-shiang, said that he is excited about the harvest because it is the first time that he tries to plant wheat. This is the program launched by the owner of Shi-yuan bakery, Shih Ming-huang, who has been working with farmers in Miaoli, Taichung, Hualien and Tainan to grow wheat. As Taiwan currently imports nearly all of its wheat and corn supply, the farmers have proved that Taiwan can produce our own wheat. Shih believes that besides rice, farmers can grow different kinds of grains in their fields. Their first Wanbao harvest is considered successful, even though there have been some crop damages and weeds due to insufficient knowledge and planting experience. Farmers have to stop their reaping machines in order to clean up the weeds stuck in their machines. However, they are confident that with this year's experience, they will produce more wheat next year. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
