A geoscientist from the National Taiwan Ocean University recently discovered several active undersea volcanoes just 100 kilometers off the coast of Gongliao, where the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant is located. And in light of the ongoing nuclear emergency in Japan, environmental groups now demand the government to suspend construction work of the facility immediately for safety concerns. National Taiwan Ocean University Professor Lee Chao-shin discovered that there are more than 70 volcanos, in as deep as 6,000 meters, located 100 kilometers off the 4th Nuclear Power Plant. 11 of them are active volcanoes. According to the scholar, the active volcanoes are found located off shore of the 4th Nuclear Plant. If a huge earthquake happens, this could cause serious damages. While none of the nuclear power plants abroad are so close to the volcanoes, environmentalists and legislators urge the authorities to stop the construction immediately. Since the construction project of the 4th nuclear power plant began, it has created a lot of disputes. The radiation leak crisis of Japan serves as a warning and environmental groups urge the government to pay attention to the nuclear safety issue and honor its pledge to build a nuclear-free homeland. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
