Taipower's endorsement on the safety of Taiwan's nuclear facilities was immediately challenged by a DPP lawmaker yesterday, who pointed out several safety threats to the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant resulting from unauthorized changes in construction design. And he said the sources of his information are no other than engineers of the nuclear plant itself.

An explosion at the third Fukushima nuclear power plant has caused legislators and environmental groups to questioned the safety of domestic nuclear power plants.

Now legislators are hearing complaints from the fourth nuclear power plant engineers saying the plant's construction should not be subject to arbitrary changes in design as shoddy work and security concerns should lead high level leaders to pay vendors for their work. In addition, some scholars worry that Taiwan's four nuclear power plants and a total of eight power generating units with geological conditions similar to Japan and Fukushima.

This is especially true of the fourth nuclear power plant which is located near fault along with active volcanoes, and in the event of natural disasters, the consequences will probably be more serious than Fukushima.

For this reason, the Legislature's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee passed an provisional motion calling for the suspension of work on the 4th nuclear power plant.

Taipower said there never was a schedule for commercial operations as environmental groups still called for a shutdown and safety examination.

To make their voices heard, they are planning on Thursday morning at 10Am to take to the streets and protest nuclear power at the Executive Yuan.
