A new documentary has just been released this month that portrays the emigration history of Kinmen natives over the past generations. And the film has immediately struck a strong emotional chord with many overseas Taiwanese.

Back in 1920, many Kinmen inhabitants reluctantly bid farewell to their family members before embarking on a journey to seek better lives.

Some of them never returned, leaving their wives in endless waiting.

To make money to support the family, Kinmen people had to work abroad and live a difficult life.

Some made it and returned home in glory while some of the less fortunate even passed away in a foreign land without ever stepping on the home soil again.

After decades, many emigrants have thrived in various countries across the world and now they want to return to their homeland to look for family roots.

Director Peter Tang spent a year making the docudrama "The Quest" and he attempted to truthfully recreate the hardship that Kinmen people experienced back then.

What the director wants to convey through the film is the legacy of the hardworking spirit and reminds the younger generation of the hardships endured by their forebears.
