A handful of young inventors have been honored on the international stage last year, and this July, more Taiwanese students are set to showcase their latest creations at the 2011 Imagine Cup, which is the world's premier student technology competition hosted by Microsoft. Let's check out these works that are inspired by current events, from the "fire escape system" to the "bridge warning detector". Many cars went missing when the huge torrential rain brought by typhoon Morakot broke the Shuan-yuan Bridge in half. Inspired by deadly natural disasters brought by extreme weathers, students at Cheng-Shiu University have developed a bridge safety warning system, which would shut down the bridge when it is shaking due to flood or earthquake. The system would even send a text message to the staff in the warning system. The recent huge fire in ALA nightclub of Taichung has claimed 9 lives and injured 12 people. Some graduate students of Chinghua University come up with a smart escape system for fire accidents. Through the WiFi-based detection device, when a fire takes place, the situation is monitored and the system can quickly guide people to escape. This product is also winning the top prize in its category. Other entries to join the global competition include a new design, which allows drivers to have a better view when driving, and a pair of eyeglasses, which helps visually impaired people to tell traffic signals. Top prizes in the three categories will be chosen to represent Taiwan to win another honor for the creative and humanitarian designs in the international contest in New York. ◆ 追蹤更多華視影音及圖文新聞: 1.用Plurk追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤 2.用Twitter追蹤華視影音及圖文新聞:追蹤
