The massive quake is greatly challenging Japan's well-prepared preventive measures for disasters, and now it is leading us to question if we have the capability in dealing with similar obstacles in Taiwan.

Although we have 12 prevention parks in Taipei City, which can be used as temporary shelters in case natural disasters happen, few people know the whereabouts of these sites, not to mention that most of us have little knowledge in coping with catastrophic situations.

In Japan, schools and some public places in the earthquake-hit areas have become a temporary shelter now for those who cannot make their way home.

In fact, Taipei City Government has also established 12 disaster prevention parks in the city, which act as recreational parks in ordinary days and will become temporary shelters if serious disasters happen.

Take the disaster prevention park in Shihlin District as an example, it is located in the Shihlin Official Residence, and the security guard's office at the gate will serve as the temporary a base of support for disaster medical care and supplies.

In addition, there are 180 sleeping bags, 30 sets of water-proof tents for 6 people, as well as necessities such as gas oven and woks are stored in the warehouse next by.

When disasters happen, Taipei City Government will set up tents for the public on the grass fields and the whole park will be able to accommodate 1,008 people.

However, our reporters have found that the indications of the park are not clear, and most people who take walks at the Shihlin Official Residence don't know that the place is actually a disaster prevention park.

If destructive earthquake happens, there will be chaos because people don't know where they can take shelter.

Taiwan, just like Japan, is one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world and the government should take more effort to improve its preparedness to natural disasters.
