A political storm may be brewing on the horizon over tens of thousands missing official documents.

The Presidential Office announced on Tuesday that more than 36,000 official files processed by the previous DPP administration during its 8-year rule have been lost, including many confidential notes from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. President Ma was said to be infuriated by the result, and has demanded the Control Yuan to probe into the case.

2 years ago, a Special Investigation Unit moved into Chen Shui-bian's office to search for documents, taking out box after box of documents.

They were surprised to learn that many were actually from the Presidential Office.

This led to a check of his top officials and found many missing documents, some 30,000 pieces in total.

The most are from President Chen's office with some 14,000 missing piece and the Vice President's office also has 3,400 missing documents.

Former Premier Su Tseng-chang also had 1,400 documents missing and Chou Yi-ren had 3,000 documents missing.

Many of these documents are from the Foreign Ministry's Secretary and are quite sensitive, not like other documents.

These documents could even include state secrets.

After leaving office, these documents should have been destroyed or archived, but Chen had these documents moved, potentially put into hiding and many do not know where they are.

To help recover these documents, Chen, former Vice President Annette Lu and a total of 17 people have been referred to the Control Yuan for investigation.
