As individual Chinese travelers will be able to tour around Taiwan starting next month, many old hotels in Kaohsiung are renovating their external appearance to attract more tourists. Also, with the city government's subsidy, many old public buildings are currently undergoing facelifts, including the Kaohsiung city police department building. The old hotel in Yenchen area of Kaohsiung is having a remodeling project on its exterior wall and it even plans to rename itself to attract Chinese tourists. In fact, this hotel is not the only one with such ambition. Many decades-old hotels in Kaohsiung area are having a makeover in an attempt to get more business when solo Chinese visitors are allowed to come to the island. The collective effort surprisingly renews the cityscape, the city's urban development bureau says. The Kaohsiung City Government also has a subsidy initiative for old, public buildings that are over 20 or 40 years. For example, the Kaohsiung City police bureau, which is close to the Love River and an MRT station, is a 40-year-old building. After the exterior wall renovation project, it has become a new landmark in the area. Besides hotels in the city, some residential buildings are also following suits.
