Call him a Renaissance Man. Fan Jhong-jie, a 27-year-old PhD student at the National Taipei University of Technology is not your conventional nerd. Aside from being the top of his class with excellent academic work, Fan has also muscled his way to the mixed martial arts championship in Taiwan.
He is one of the most feared fighters in Taiwan.
Twenty-seven-year-old pugilist Fan Jhong-jie first made his mark in the martial arts world at a Thai boxing tournament in Chungli in 2003, claiming the first
Four years later, he became Taiwan's top-ranked boxer in his weight class of mixed martial arts. That year, he even defeated an Italian top boxer to take home the first prize at an international tournament in Beijing.
But boxing is far from the only important thing in his life.
When he is not wearing the gloves, Fan pursues a PhD degree in medical engineering at the National Taipei University of Technology. And he seems to be just as competitive in school as he is in the arena, being the number one student of his class.
Fan said he owes much of his success to his girlfriend, who is also his training partner.
And when asked if the heavy training schedule has hurt his schoolwork, Fan explained it actually has the opposite effect, helping him to do better research by releasing his lab-related stress.
So what does he plan to do in the future? Fan said that he wants to be a world-class, doctoral-level martial artist.
Whatever that means, considering what Fan has accomplished so far, you just have to believe that he has the brawn and the brains to achieve his dream.
