SAVE THE WORLD THROUGH FASHION

The lead designers in the world of fashion are doing more than just guiding us about the colors and patterns we should be wearing for the next season, they are now contributing to the effort of saving the world

When First Lady Michelle Obama visited South Africa in June, she wore a colorful print top from the ASOS Africa fair-trade line, to show her support of the program.

And it turns out that ASOS is not the only one trying to create jobs for people in the region.

Nicole Miller recently collaborated with Indego Africa, and debuted a selection of brightly colored sarongs, shorts and bangle bracelets in five African prints. The collaboration between the fashion industry and the social enterprise employs more than 250 women in Rwanda, with 15% of its proceeds going to the organization.

The British designer, Vivienne Westwood, also worked with the United Nations International Trade Center to produce her new Autumn/Winter 2011 collection in industrial Nairobi, with an aim to hire and teach local women design skills for them to support their own living. Over 7,000 women now work in the program.

Vivienne Westwood is also launching a second collection of handbags and accessories for the Ethical Fashion Programme in Africa. The new collection will include 14 styles of handbags-including the classic Westwood Yasmine bag, weekenders, laptop cases and key rings that are all handmade out of recycled materials, including roadside advertisements and safari tents.
