A German government official has ordered web users to stop clicking the Facebook's "like" button, saying that it gives away personal information.

According to the data protection commissioner, Facebook builds a broad individual and even personalized profile of its members", and furthermore, it tracks web users for up to two years. The German official urges "people not to create Facebook accounts, and keep themselves away from clicking on social plug-ins, like the "like" button."

Some media reports are also saying that Facebook can see information such as IP address of users who select the "like" button.

In response, Facebook is strongly denying the claims, stressing that the company is compliant with EU data-protection standards.
