For eight decades Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue has watched over the Brazilian city with its arms wide open. The monument stands 130 foot or 40 meters tall, and is the city's most iconic landmark. Today, a crowd gathered around its pedestal to witness an unusual event. As the sun began to set the statue started to light up -- in pink, to mark the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Maria Caleffi is president at a non-profit agency that fights the disease. Femama President Maira Caleffi, saying (Portuguese) "We are trying to promote the use of mammograms and inform people that doing a mammogram is the only way to diagnose (breast cancer) and to reduce mortality rates from breast cancer." Dubbed in Brazil as the "Pink October" initiative, other events are planned to draw attention to breast cancer.
