Facing a surging yen and a shrinking Japanese market, automaker Nissan is now turning to wealthy consumers in China. A Nissan spokesman said Wednesday (November 2) the company may start producing its high-end Infiniti cars in mainland China, and move its global headquarters for the luxury brand to Hong Kong.

Although Nissan has yet to finalise the plans, Japan's Nikkei financial daily said that the Infiniti factory in China will likely be one in Hubei province, which is owned by Nissan's joint venture, Dongfeng Motor. Among Japan's Big Three automakers, Nissan is lagging behind in luxury car sales.

Nissan aims to raise annual sales of the luxury line to 500,000 by 2016 with China expected to become its biggest market. (Toshi Maeda/Reuters)
