When Irish boy band Westlife announced in October they were splitting after 14 years in the music business, fans were left heartbroken.

Established by Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Brian McFadden in July 1998, Westlife received immediate attention as the opening act for Boyzone and Backstreet Boys' concerts in Dublin.

Later in March 1999, they released their first single, "Swear It Again" which immediately topped the charts in Ireland and in UK for two weeks.

Their charms are unstoppable as they remain to be the only group that has their first seven singles peak at number one in UK and Irish history, an achievement that was only behind The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

Despite the departure of one of the founding member, Brian McFadden, in 2004, Westlife continued to break records, and is regarded as one of the most successful boy bands worldwide.

During their 14-year music career, they have sold more than 44 million albums, and have obtained 14 UK number ones and 25 top ten singles. However, the boys believe it is now the right time to call it quits.

"...ending it on a high and ending it when we are still special to people, that is an idea that has cropped up and began to become quite real, especially over the last maybe couple of years. We're on a journey and all journeys at some point come to an end and as I said we would like to leave behind a legacy and remember Westlife for something that was big,"

And the members denied rumors, which implied that the break-up was because they no longer like each other.

"Fourteen years in we have proven to everyone already that we genuinely do get on. I don't think we would have lasted fourteen years if we didn't, we are all quite compatible as people and you know of course there have always been moments when we're bickering and stuff like that but in general we get on."

Westlife is also releasing a greatest hits collection this month, the 12th album in their career, as a farewell gift to their supportive fans. The first single, "Lighthouse," which was penned by another famous boyband member, Take That's Gary Barlow, was released in the U.K. earlier this week.

"Gary Barlow and John Shanks our producer we worked with a lot the last few years, they just wrote a song, a pop song," "I think at the start we were wondering 'is it good enough, is it not' and the more we listened to it the more we couldn't get it out of our heads so when that is happening to you you know there is something good in it, because the chorus sticks in your brain a bit so we recorded it and it turned out great and then the record company wanted to go with it."

Even though Westlife will no longer be seen rocking the stage together after June 2012, the group says it's not the last time fans will see of them.

"I think individually we will all focus on our own career, whether they are singing, acting or TV, whatever it may be it will be our life."
