The job centre in Athens is becoming an increasingly frequent destination for many Greeks. Dimitris Markou (23 year-old universtiy graduate, unemployed) : "At the moment it is a constant journey and hunt for work, and whatever I find I will take.

I am a burden to my family and it's getting harder and harder."The number of Greeks out of work fell slightly in September after hitting a record high of 18.4 percent in August. But at 17 and half percent the figure remains far worse than the euro zone average of 10.2 percent.

Dimitris Markou said: "The situation looks like it is going to stay the same, especially for young people, even young people with degrees cannot find a job." Salome Spilidopoulou (50, Unemployed Office Assistant): "I look in the newspaper, I ask friends, I look everywhere... but still nothing yet."

Greece has now been in recession for four years. The new figures show manufacturing and industrial output in October were down around 12 percent The economy contracted by 5.5 percent overall this year and 60,000 businesses have closed over the past two years.

Tough austerity measures including higher taxes and cuts in public sector pay and pensions haven't helped. And no recovery is expected before 2013.(Sonia Legg/Reuters)
